These funds if approved, will be used for eligible uses per HUD including but not limited to some demolition of abandoned and vacant houses and some new construction in neighborhoods hit hardest by blight. The City has deployed access points in a 4 square mile area and is currently expanding the network on Washington Road. The City of Augusta is eligible to receive $606,372 in Community Development Block Grant-Recovery (CDBG-R) funding from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA or “the Recovery Act”). This funding referred to as “CDBG-R,” is a separate appropriation which requires a substantial amendment to the City’s 2008 Annual Action Plan.

Department of Housing and Urban Development through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA or “the Recovery Act”). Project STP-7001(9), is a proposal to improve Wrightsboro Road from the existing five lane section of Wrightsboro Road, approximately 2,400 feet east of the intersection with Jimmy Dyess Parkway, to the Interstate 520 southbound ramp in Augusta-Richmond County, a distance of approximately 2.4 miles.

The consultant firm Wilbur Smith Associates has been awarded the contract to assist the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission, the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Augusta Regional Transportation Study (ARTS) area, update its existing 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan.

The goal of the ARTS 2035 LRTP update is to ensure that current and future multimodal transportation community needs, and cost effective solutions, are identified. Potential solutions to community transportation needs must meet federal planning and air quality requirements, as well as be financially constrained. An initial kickoff meeting with local stakeholders was held on October 15, 2009 at the Julian Smith BBQ Pit. In addition to stakeholder meetings, public participation meetings will be held throughout the year. Special outreach will be undertaken to elicit comments from Environmental Justice communities, which includes minorities and persons in low income brackets.

The 2035 LRTP is scheduled to be completed and approved by September of 2010. [Click here...]

The modifications involve a change in the federal funding category for resurfacing and maintenance projects in Richmond County: Sand Bar Ferry Road (SR 28); part of Deans Bridge Road (SR4); SR 56 Spur from SR 56 to SR 10; SR 104 from SR 4 / US 25 BUS to NW of 15th Street; SR 104 from NW of 15th Street to SR 4/ US 25BUS; and CR 1509 / Keysville Road from SR 88 to Burke County Line. All of these projects will be funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly known as the Economic Stimulus Program. This $192 million road improvement project started in June 2007 and is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

The project consists of 6.25 miles of widening for additional lanes along I-20, the addition of collector-distributor lanes along parts of I-520 (Bobby Jones Expressway) and I-20. The reconstruction of the I-20 / I-520 interchange includes the addition of two flyover ramps, and a grade-separated interchange at Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and I-520.
